Mammograms or Mammoscams?

Greetings everyone,

Changing gears again this week, every year we hear about the increase incidence of breast cancer & how many lives are being saved by mammograms. But is this really true? Are mammograms really increasing the cases of breast cancer because radiation is being directed at a small, ver sensitive area? What are thermograms & are they more effective at catching breast cancer before they are seen on mammograms?

When I first started hearing about mammograms, they recommended women start getting them at the age of 30. But as I got closer to that age, then the age was backed up to 35, then 40. Now I think the age is 45 or 50. Last summer, my general practitioner wanted me to get a mammogram but I suggested a thermogram instead. Neither her or her nurse had heard of it. They did a series of phone calls & couldn't find a facility in Iowa that did those. I did a search online & found one in Des Moines. Unfortunately, my insurance company wouldn't cover the cost anyway even tho the cost of a thermogram is a fraction of the cost of a mammogram.

Does that make any sense to anyone?

How much radiation is in a mammogram? Some reports are that a mammogram emits 20 times more radiation than a chest x-ray. Radiation exposure is cumulative. Take that amount of radiation & then mutiply it times the number of mammograms a woman gets during her lifetime. No wonder breast cancer is on its way up!

Are mammograms really effective at preventing breast cancer? For as many years that mammograms have been done on women, you would expect a really high number of breast cancer deaths prevented. BUT, in actuality this number is only 10%. 10% is really low considering how the widespread use of this screening.

Where is the medical system failing women? Good question & only by a bit of research will you find the answer.

Mammogram or mammoscam? A doctor friend of mine in a burb of Chicago says mammoscam. I snicker everytime he says that.

So, what is an alternative to mammograms? How about a Thermogram? This is a fairly new procedure with just a few facilities around the country. Screening to start watching for breast cancer starts at the age of 20. The biggest plus about Thermograms is there is no radiation involved. It uses heat to look for changes in the breast & chest tissue to detect cancer. Thermograms catch the cancer 10 years SOONER than mammograms.

Here is a link to more info on this procedure -

http://www.breastthermography.com/mammography_thermography.htm

http://www.thermographyofiowa.com/questions.html

Why are mammograms preferred to thermograms? Good question, money, thermograms are a fairly new procedure so it could be the fear of the unknown? Hopefully as time goes on, thermograms will be more common place & mammograms will be only used if thermograms are unclear.

We always hear about breast cancer awareness month but what about breast cancer prevention? Can breast cancer be prevented? One way to prevent breast cancer is to have a high level of Vitamin D3 in your body as shown by this chart.

http://i226.photobucket.com/albums/dd52/mopar28m/vitd10.jpg?t=1303629069

What about environmental factors? We hear this quit a bit when it comes causes of autism & other diseases. But what about breast cancer? What do we put on that is close to the breast tissue that might be harmful to the breast tissue & lymph nodes? Many women are either afraid or ashamed to sweat so they put on an antipersperant. This blocks the sweat glands & makes its way into your lymph nodes. Have you looked at the ingredients in this? Usually aluminum is the #1 ingredients & in rather large amounts. There are conflicting studies as to whether or not there is a correlation but why risk it. There have been studies that possibly link the use of antipersperants to Alzheimers. Since anything you put on your skin is abosbed into the body in just a few minutes, the aluminum quickly makes its way into your system fairly quickly. The aluminum accumulates in the lymph nodes from under arm use & in the brain.

You have to some looking but there are deodorants out there that do NOT have aluminum in them. Wal-Greens has a variety in stock. I use this, I get it from my local Hy-Vee grocery store.

http://www.21stcenturyvitamin.com/

Tom's of Maine has several non-aluminum containing products. A word of caution, if you have sensitive skin, you may want to avoid this one. My daughter & I both had problems with skin irritation.

Am I saying avoiding aluminum & having a high D3 level alone will prevent breast cancer? No, I'm just saying these are 2 things you need to look at & maybe try to implement into a persons life.

I hope this blog entry has been very informative for you. This is another one of my things I like to educate others about.

Have a GREAT week!

Makari Clear Acnyl Cream-Review, swatches & pics

Hi ladies,

I was not feeling well since 2 days so you couldn’t see my new post and I’m sorry for that. I received many mails from readers regarding this absence and I really appreciate the fact that they all missed me...thanks a lot!!

Today I’m reviewing about a product which has really surprised me. It does happen sometimes that brands with less fame work even better than the highly popular brands and products . After seeing its effects I can only say that I’m very much impressed with this product.

Makari Clear Acnyl Cream

Makari Clear Acnyl cream is a formula for acne treatment.

What the product claims-

See the picture below...hope it's clear enough :D

Net weight-

100 ml but I got two sachets as a sample

Price

Exact price is Rs 3000 and you can buy it from Makari's Indian website

For US the price is $52.45 from makari.com

How to use it?

Apply twice daily on the face or any other parts effected by blemishes and acne with a gentle massage.

In the mirror of my own experience

Although my skin is normal but always it changes with the weather....as a result it becomes a bit oily in summers but still never had I faced any pimple problem. But unfortunately this time I had to face this problem for I had a pimple under my lower lip...which although a tiny one looked really irritating so somehow I had to get rid of it.Coincidentally...as one may call it....my sis was here for 6-7 days and she too was facing the same problem as she has oily skin and she was really disappointed due to her pimples near her nose.therefore on my suggestion, she applied it twice daily and after 5 days they all disappeared!!! We both were amazed and after this experience I can say this clearly that I’m highly satisfied with this product.

The Good points-

Honest claim.

Helps to get rid of all the acne and pimples.

I love its light fragrance.

The texture is neither too thick nor runny.

So easy to apply on the effected areas.

The results come up in a very natural manner. The pimples fade out gradually and after that the skin from there becomes clear and soft in its natural ways.

It doesn’t dry out the portion of the skin after recovering it.

The formula is highly effective.

The Bad points-

There is only one bad point in this product and that is undoubtedly it's high price which is too much for a common man to get it and enjoy it's advantages.

Therefore in my opinion a company's prices should be such that even common man can afford it.

Overall verdict-

I’m really impressed. It does what it claims. A customer buys any product with this hope that it works for him because he reaches after reading its claim about the problem. But if it disappoints him it’s a crime in my opinion. So it is a honest brand as far as this product is concern.

Rating- 4/5

I wanted to give full points to this but its high price has decreased its rating.

Recommendation-

Yes, if you can afford it, then of course. It’ll surely work for you!!

So ladies, have you tried any Makari beauty products?? How did you find it? You can check out their products at their website.

If you want to purchase their products, go to their website and order now coz they're even having some good offers these days. I’m also impressed with their quick service. I got my stuff only within 24 hours.

Have a great weekend ahead!!!

Revlon Colorstay liquid eyeliner-Review, Swatches&pics

You can call me a big Revlon fan,and if you’re a regular reader of COB you would surely have noticed a great lot of Revlon cosmetics in my makeup looks. But I had never tried its liquid eyeliner because I was quite satisfied with my Colorbar and Loreal eyeliners. Eyeliners are an essential part of makeup, especially for me!! In my opinion, my eyes can not become much noticeable without eyeliner. I don’t like applying kohl and I prefer eyeliners. Whenever I do makeup an eyeliner on the eyes is the must for me.

Anyways let's come to the point guys and today I’m reviewing my favorite liquid eyeliner: Revlon Colorstay Liquid Liner-Black Beauty which has become an essential part of my makeup kit.

Net weight-

2.5ml

Price-

Rs 550

My experience-

Earlier I wasn't a fan of waterproof liquid liners as I found it too hard to remove them. But then I thought of experimenting and bought this liner and after using only once, I became a fan of this liner. You can see this in most of my makeup looks. I’m not an expert in makeup but this liner has made eye makeup quite easy for me. The only thing which bores me is removing this with almond oil but now I’m used to it.I’m not going to change my eyeliner after this. This will be a part of my makeup kit forever.

Good points-

It’s so easy to tote around and allows for easier application to line the eyes. I have to only shake it and then apply. It gives me instant beauty to my eyes.

Colorstay technology allows wear for up to 16 hours! And it totally does for me, I can wear this all day and it still looks just as fresh!

Revlon Colorstay Liquid Liner is easy to make thin and thick lines as you wish! The formula glides so smoothly on the skin!

It’s tip gives a nice soft thin or thick line, as well as giving me a better control to be able to line the eyes smoothly and evenly, dispenses the right amount of product to eliminate mistakes!

You can get the right amount of shade that you require.

It doesn’t has any smell. Gives lovely and clear finish to the eyes.

Great to everyday use especially for office going ladies. No tension of smudging.

The swatches...see how pigmented it is-

Bad points-

Oh no…none.

Rating-

4.75/5

Overall verdict-

I’m an avid fan of Revlon Colorstay range like the foundation, concealer, compact mineral compact, eyeliner, pencil liner, blush etc. This eyeliner is the best that I’ve used till date and I would surely purchase it again and again!!!

Will I recommend it-

Yes of course!! If you require something worth the price this is it.

So ladies, what do you think about this liner?? Have you tried it...which other liners do you prefer??

Eyeshadow palette from Born Pretty Store+EOTDs

Hey pretty ladies,

Today I’m going to show you a lovely palette from Born Pretty store. I’m not an eye shadow junkie but sometimes it looks nice to apply eye shadows on my eyes. I’m not a makeup expert but my readers always ask me to do posts of makeup looks so I have to do that for them.

Some words about Born Pretty Store-

An online store which mainly consists of nail art products like nail polishes, nail art stamping etc. but also have many other things like shadows, contact lenses etc. which they sell at the best price and provide the best service. They also provide Free Shipping Worldwide. So if you're a nail art junkie Born Pretty Store is the best place for you!!

They sent me two palettes but today I’m reviewing just one. This palette has 16 shades in it, all shades are different from each other. There is also an applicator provided.

Packaging

The packaging of this palette is pretty and attractive. All shades are secure in their cases but palette lid is not strong. It can be break and shadows can be destroyed in case of a fall down. The palette is without any mirror which is a big minus point.

Applicator

The applicator of this palette is nice and it’s so easy to apply the shadow on my lids with it although I always use eye brush for applying the shadows.

Shades

The palette has 16 shades and I have already written that the all shades of the palette different from each other. It is a combination of some light and some dark shades which is a good thing. Sometimes a palette with some same repeated shades makes it very frustrating. But this one has almost every cool and warm shade in it. The cost of this palette is very attractive and less, only $4.84, so it’s a good option for beginners of makeup who want to experiment with the colors.

Pigmentation

I’ll not say that all the shades are pigmented but most of shades are buttery smooth in the texture that glide on skin well even without a primer and can be built up to create the desired depth of the shade you want. But some are not pigmented and you have to take out them again & again and still you’ll not get your right color on your lids. This makes very disappointed. You can understand it by swatches.

The first row-

The second row-

The good Points-

Most of the shades are pigmented, have a soft and buttery texture.

Easy to blend.

Good combination of different kinds of shades.

Every skin colored girls can get their right skin toned shades for any occasion.

Lasting power is just okay. You can remain free for 4-5 hours without tension.

Not much fallout.

The Bad Points-

The most irritating thing is in this palette is it's smell. I don’t like it's smell. I think this is a big negative point in it.

The palette comes without any mirror which is very inconvenient for doing makeup. It’s a big palette; you hold it in your hand and then hold a mirror in your other hand for applying shadow. How disgusting!!

All the shades in this palette are shimmery, some are very some are a bit less so if you're not a fan of shimmery shades you can skip this one.

Overall verdict-

Overall I feel that according to it's price it's a lovely palette and will be great for beginners who would love to play with shades!!

Rating- 2.75/5

So girls did you find this review interesting?? If not I have something more for you which you may find better. Here are two EOTDs which I did using shades from this palette...check it out!!

Celebrity Makeup #5-Kate Winslet

If you ask about my favorite movie from Hollywood, I’ll take the first name of Titanic. I love to see it again and again even today.

I love everything about this movie but the most favorite are the Hero and the heroine of that movie. Dashing Leonardo De Caprio and beautiful and innocent Kate Winslet. It’s not only me but I think there’s no one in this world who dislikes this actress.

I won’t say that it’s Kate’s best makeup look but it’s really beautiful and even easy to try out.

She has worn red lipstick but in spite of that, her makeup looks subtle and naturally simple. She has done very light eye makeup and this makes her look even more graceful. Anyways, if you want to do this makeup, you can take some tips from here.

Face

At first I’ll moisten my face by a good moisturizer. Take an ice cube in a cotton cloth and dab my face with it, especially, the T-zone area.

Now, I will apply foundation on my face. I’ll choose Mabelline Recover foundation for this look. Apply in dots first & then blend it as always with my fingers or a foundation brush.

If need a concealer, I’ll apply Revlon Colorstay concealer because I love it so much.

Then I’ll apply compact on my face. I’ll try Revlon New complexion pressed powder here.

Cheeks

Now I apply some coral and peach colored blush on the apple of my cheeks. I choose Chambor blush and Revlon Matte Powder Blush together. First the coral one then the peach and blend.

Eyes

I’ll use Meilin shine eyeliner in Black on the upper lash line first and then apply dark brown eyeliner from Revlon and smudged it on the lower lash line.

Next, I’ll lightly dust a peach shade from my Oriflame palette on the eyelids. To make my eyes pop, I’ll add a few coats of L’Oreal Extra Volume Collagen mascara.

Lips

For the lips, I’ll surely go for Mac Russian Red lipstick but before that will shape the lips using Maybelline Hollywood Red lip liner.

So gals what do you think about Kate's look?? Hope this breakdown helps!! Happy Easter Day!!!

Caramel coloring - Safe or not?

Greetings to everyone,

A few weeks ago, there was news that caramel coloring had cancer causing chemicals in it. Is this true? Are there different kinds of caramel coloring? Are there safe kinds of caramel coloring? Lets take a look at this controversial topic.

There is Caramel coloring 3 which is used in Soy Sauce, Teriyaki sauce, Worcestershire Sauce, etc. Caramel coloring 4 is used in sodas. Many of us have made caramel coloring by melting sugar in a pan on our stove tops. My grandmother did that many times when she was making pop corn balls.

We're going to examine specifically Caramel coloring 4. It is the process in which this coloring is made that makes it carcinogenic.

"Chemical reactions result in the formation of 2-methylimidazole and 4 methylimidazole, which in government-conducted studies caused lung, liver, or thyroid cancer or leukemia in laboratory mice or rats.

The National Toxicology Program, the division of the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences that conducted the animal studies, said that there is “clear evidence” that both 2-MI and 4-MI are animal carcinogens. Chemicals that cause cancer in animals are considered to pose cancer threats to humans. Researchers at the University of California, Davis, found significant levels of 4-MI in five brands of cola.

Federal regulations distinguish among four types of caramel coloring, two of which are produced with ammonia and two without it. CSPI wants the Food and Drug Administration to prohibit the two made with ammonia. The type used in colas and other dark soft drinks is known as Caramel IV, or ammonia sulfite process caramel. Caramel III, which is produced with ammonia but not sulfites, is sometimes used in beer, soy sauce, and other foods."

The caramel coloring that is used in sauces, is caramel coloring #3. This coloring is ok. I'm very happy about this since I use sauces in a lot of the dishes that I cook.

I know that the manufacturers of Coke, Pepsi & the others who use caramel coloring are going to say that their coloring is just fine. Of course, they are going to say that just to keep their sales up. Changing their manufacturing process would cost thousands if not millions of dollars. This would put a dent in their profit margin & in this economy, they wouldn't want to happen. There are natural alternatives to coloring such as beets, carrots or even a grandmothers recipe for making caramel on the stove top.

A surprise that I came across when I was doing research for this article was that caramel colorings 1 & 3 may have gluten in them. Some people are allergic to gluten. Here is a link to those ingredients.

http://docs.google.com/viewer?a=v&q=cache:dZGu8BN_7HAJ:www.snapa.org/LinkClick.aspx?fileticket%3DXb6AxwWPtYI%253D%26tabid%3D2403+caramel+coloring+3+soy+sauce,+teriyaki+sauce,+browning+sauce&hl=en&gl=us&pid=bl&srcid=ADGEESiTPA9eRXHnNHQorLv9CxaZF7LXWc1CkI0tkiT8mTgDTQO8QD-sdQoOtlpX6FXAZVWjNn7d_U1YipJcGcUkUZgVV9Z9qSZxw307yovM0Paw0Dzbho3LyDdXPiBcvtbOHHObZ1o7&sig=AHIEtbTGpGikGTGxWUMK51ss66jVF9C52w&pli=1

Many parents who have autistic children give their children a gluten free diet in hopes of helping them improve their behavior. There are many parents that swear by this. Personally I can't say either way since I don't have any experience with autism. I feel for those parents who do have children that have this disability.

If you wanted an excuse to quit drinking pop, specifically the kind that has caramel coloring to it, this is the one to use. I know that I'm going to have to change my habits. There are some days that I work anywhere from 8-15 hours per day. I need a little pick me up, like caffeine to keep going. I usually get a Pepsi but no more. I'll have to find a alternative OR give up caffeine completely & put in less hours working both at my job & around the house. :)

Until next week my friends, stay safe & well,

Lori

Revlon Illuminating powder shadow-Review, Swatches & pics

If I’m questioned about my favorite brands, the first name will come of Revlon. This brand has always given amazing products to the customers. I have lot of cosmetics of this brand. Today I’m reviewing Revlon Illuminating powder shadow which I had bought around 6 months ago. It’s a quad and has some beautiful shades in it…so check out the review & swatches!!

What Revlon Illuminating powder shadow claims:

Luminous finish brightens the eyes.

Ultra fine powder shadow glides on smoothly and won’t settle into creases.

Stay true color for all day wear.

Fragrance free.

Shade name:

Out of the blue

Price:

Rs. 350

Packaging:

The packaging of this eye shadow quad is quite beautiful. Has a transparent lid while the other part of it is black. It’s very handy and lightweight.

Applicator:

There’s a small applicator provided in this quad. On one side it’s broad while a thinner one on the other side. In my opinion, I would say that the applicator is not much useful and so it’ll be better if one uses an eye shadow brush to apply these shadows.

The shades-

  1. This is a dark brown shade. It’s totally matte and quite pigmented. I love to apply it on the outer corner of my eyelids and some times a light touch on the whole lids to give an awesome look to my eyes.
  2. This is a sky blue shade which looks quite pretty on the lids with a light colored outfit. This shade is completely a summer color and can be used with day wears. It’s very pigmented!!
  3. The third one is an off white shade or skin color shade which can be used on the brow bone. One can use it as a base before applying shadow. It is quite pigmented and easily visible after applying on the lids.
  4. This one is smoky bluish gray shade and is my favorite. I have used it many times and it has given very pretty looks to my eyes. It can be worn on both day or night occasions. A slight touch can make it a casual look and dark touch with black outfit makes it very special. This is also very pigmented and very soft and easy to blend.

In the mirror of my own experience:

I have been using this eye shadow quad from 6 months I’m very satisfied with its result. All colors of in this quad are fantastic. You can achieve a really sexy smoky eye look. I also use the dark brown as an eyebrow powder. It matches perfectly with my cool medium brown hair. It has fantastic staying power also. It always looks like it's been newly applied. I don't have any problems with it creasing on my lids either. The best quality of this quad is that it never fails to make the eyes attractive even during day or at night.

Pigmentation-

Almost all the shades are greatly pigmented. The 2nd shade i.e. the light blue one is the most pigmented while the others come after it. But overall the pigmentation is very impressive.

Texture-

The texture of all the shades is very smooth and they are easy to blend. They do not crease at all and show up well. Perfect shades for both night and day wear!!

Staying power-

They last for around 5-6 hrs which is good enough…isn’t it?
